Mother Daughter Summer Project

This post may contain affiliate links.

My oldest child is my only girl. She loves to bake, paint, act and do puzzles. She is whitty, adores playing in the mud and turns obnoxiously golden tan in the summer. Obviously I think she is so stinkin’ cute. She loves to take pictures, especially since she got my mom’s old IPhone. Which is not used as a phone but for all the fun games, taking pictures and some texting. I was completely unprepared for this season to begin.

Times are different now. It isn’t like when I hogged up the telephone line so much my parents broke down and got me my own phone line. The call waiting and emergency breakthroughs were just to much to handle at a certain point. Am I dating myself?

Anyway…her love of picture taking and desire to always have a project going got me thinking about something special we could do together this summer. I am trying to embrace the tech age with her as she goes. I decided to throw out an idea…

What if we spent 40 days of summer each taking a picture every day of our favorite moment? And shared them? And made a scrapbook out of them? And had friends join us?

Why 40 days?

There are so many references to 40 in the bible…It rained for 40 days in Genesis, King David reigned for 40 years, Jesus spends 40 days in the desert to be tempted by the devil…and so on. I thought it would be a good way for us to talk about and discover some of the events tied to 40 days/years in the bible while doing something fun for just the two of us.

We decided to go big and post our pics to Instagram everyday. At the end of the summer I am going to upload all our pictures – straight from Instagram to a site like www.blurb.com and create a commemorative scrapbook. Just think moms…in literally a few clicks you can have all the highlights of summer scrapbooked! ( I am not exaggerating, it’s that easy!)

Mae already wants it to be a summer tradition and we haven’t even started! I might have to agree. I’m kind of excited to share a selfie our two with my sweet baby girl. I hope she will still want to do something like this with me in a few years. Until then I am eating up every moment she wants to share!

We were hoping you might want to join along. Actually Mae REALLY wants to see what everyone else is up to! We are kickin’ off our 40 days this Sunday, June 28th and running through August 6th. If you want to follow along you can find me on Instagram @huntandhost or follow our hashtag #mandm40daysofsummer. If you decide to join the fun please use the hashtag on all your pictures so we can check out your adventures too. Lucky for us M & M stands for Mae and mom…but it can stand for me & mom, mom & me or whatever works for you! Your 40 days don’t have to line up with ours. Do what fits your schedule best.

We hope you will spend some fun quality time together, being silly, relishing and reflecting on your days, learning more about the bible and sharing life along the way.

We even designed this fun logo together to mark the event:

There are a few rules in place on our end. Mae will not be following anyone back or responding to comments on her account (unless I am helping her). We are practicing social media safety as we go. She is excited to share with our friends and family, but by no means is she looking to gain a platform 😉

Happy 40 days to you!

Oh my goodness……I cannot wait to go home and tell Carly about this!! She has been taking pictures with her ipad lately like crazy and making slideshows. Marking my calendar now! And I’m cracking up remembering emergency breakthroughs!! hahaha…were we really that desperate for communication!! Now I’m trying to find away to get away from it some days.

This is great! I am “informally” in, aka, it may not be 40 days, but we will do what we can. As for Mae wanting to continue this tradition through the years, it’s a good bet she will! Since my daughter got her first iPod almost 7 years ago, she’s been snap-happy with mom/daughter pictures, and she will be 19 this summer! She’s even started “hash tagging” our summer adventures. 🙂 Enjoy every single moment with your girl!

Thanks Bonnie, the instagram scrapbook is so easy. I am a traditional paper and scissor kind of girl but this is going to be a fun quick alternative!
